Safe and smooth shipping is one of the key tasks of the Coastal Division. The team Flemish Hydrography contributes by collecting hydrographical and hydrometeorological data used for the realization of:
- Sea, foreshore, seabed and Scheldt depth maps
- wreck database
- tide tables
- current atlases
- Notices to Mariners
- Marine and coastal weather forecast
- electronic navigational charts
and for supporting hydraulic engineering sites, offshore activities, research, and protection of the environment. With all these activities the Flemish Hydrography is regularly in contact with foreign hydrographic organisations. Ensuring safe shipping doesn't stop at the Belgian border.
The team Flemish Hydrography exchanges data and experience with hydrographic organisations of our neighboring countries. The International Hydrographic Organization (www.iho.int) joins all these organisations and defines international standards to which all publications must adhere. The Flemish Hydrography participates in meetings and conferences of the International Hydrographic Organization during which important decisions are taken about the operation of and cooperation between hydrographic organisations worldwide.
